MARLBOROUGH - The second Marlborough Triathlon is scheduled for August 1, but the race is already starting to fill up.
Race director Bill Burnett said the triathlon is at 40 percent of its limit of 550 participants, and he expects it to reach capacity quickly. More than 500 competitors swam, cycled and ran in the first Marlborough Triathlon last July.
"We had such an amazing inaugural event," Burnett said. "I want to build on that momentum.".
Tragedy Drives Woman Toward Triathlon

After an undetected heart condition claimed the life of 38-year-old Joe Lyons during the 2007 Cohasset Triathlon, no one would have blamed Joe's widow, Karen, if she distanced herself from the sport.
In fact, though she enjoyed an active lifestyle, Karen had never participated in a triathlon.
However, that tragedy two years ago actually drove Karen toward the sport, not only as a participant and active member of the multisport community, but also as an advocate for race safety. Ironically, in 2008 Karen, who resides in Newton, Mass., entered her first triathlon at Cohasset, where her husband had died just a year earlier. She has now completed five races, including the Cohasset Triathlon for a second time.

Marlborough — The prolific father-son racing team of Dick and Rick Hoyt has signed on to participate in this Sunday's Marlborough Triathlon.
The Hoyts have competed in more than 200 triathlon events. Residents from Hopkinton to Boston know them for doing the Boston Marathon 27 times, with Dick pushing Rick, a paraplegic, in a wheelchair the whole way. This year's Boston Marathon was Team Hoyt's 1,000th racing event.
Professional triathlete Jarrod Shoemaker, a Maynard resident and one of the Marlborough Triathlon founders, met the Hoyts at a Maynard road race last year, said Kathy Boyer, the office manager at Team Hoyt in Holland. When the three athletes met up again at the Walt Disney World Marathon weekend last January, Shoemaker mentioned the Marlborough event, Boyer said. And the Hoyts penciled it in on their schedule.

Marlborough — Last-minute details are underway as the city prepares for 600 professional and amateur athletes to take to the streets Sunday July 26 in Marlborough's first triathlon. The race, which is hoped to become an annual event, was cofounded by Olympic triathlete Jarrod Shoemaker and his trainer, Marlborough resident Tim Crowley.
Crowley explained that he moved to the city 17 years ago because of the races that the area once hosted, and he was excited by the opportunity of starting a triathlon at home. Designed by Shoemaker and Crowley, the course will start and end at the Marlborough High School after looping around the city. It includes a one-third-mile swim in Fort Meadow Reservoir, a 15-mile bike ride and a 3.3-mile run.

MARLBOROUGH - Amateurs will compete with elite athletes later this month in a triathlon that benefits local charities.
The inaugural Marlborough Triathlon, scheduled for 9 a.m. on July 26, will benefit the Marlborough Public Schools Foundation - a nonprofit that raises money for such school programs as health and wellness activities - and Children's Hospital Boston.
Maynard resident Jarrod Shoemaker, a 2008 Olympic triathlete ranked in the top 5 in the world, is an event co-founder and registered race participant. He and his coach, Marlborough resident Tim Crowley, have traveled around the country for races, and Shoemaker is in Europe gearing up for a race tomorrow.

Jarrod Shoemaker might not be able to accompany you on a 12-mile bike ride or that training run around Little Harbor - and it's likely you wouldn't be able to keep up with him either - but the Olympic triathlete can give you a few pointers to get you in tip-top shape for the upcoming Cohasset Triathlon.

Triathletes leave slowing economy in the dust

Concerned about the sagging U.S. economy, the NBA cut its staff 9 percent. Despite gas prices tumbling back to Earth, NASCAR teams are being pared.
Even the venerable NFL, which will charge a record $3 million for a 30-second Super Bowl commercial in 2009, announced this week it's reducing staff by more than 10 percent.
There is one sport, however, that's giving the recession a stiff-arm. From the beginner's sprint distance to the veteran's Ironman, triathlon is thriving.
The Beat: Local triathlon now a reality

It's natural for people to compare a place they're going to where they're from.
So even when Jarrod Shoemaker races in some of the most elite triathlons across the country, he'll still sometimes come away thinking that the training and racing conditions are better back in MetroWest. The kicker came during an international race last year in Des Moines, Iowa, when circumstances forced the event to be moved to a high school venue. Still, it ended up being a smashing success.
"That got us thinking, 'God, this could be done (here),"' said Tim Crowley, Shoemaker's coach.
And after meeting with race director Bill Burnett, the Marlborough Triathlon was born. Burnett founded the Cohasset Triathlon two years ago, and will be expanding his series this summer to this area, as well as Gloucester. The race date for Marlborough is July 26, and Burnett, Crowley and Shoemaker - who are all already hard at work in preparing for the date - are hoping for as much success as the Cohasset Triathlon, where 900 racers competed this past summer and Shoemaker set the course record.
